VACANCY – PROJECT OFFICER INTERN

 Company Overview:

Noupoort Wind Farm achieved its Commercial Operations Date on schedule and on budget, as part of the third round of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

Noupoort Wind Farm received support from the local municipality and surrounding community during the construction phase and into operations. A number of economic development projects aimed at contributing to sustainable community growth through financial and non-financial community development involvement. During the operations, a monetary commitment has been made to specifically developing enterprises and improving the socio-economic welfare of the community for 20 years.

Situated in the Umsobomvu Municipal Area, located 10km east of Noupoort in the Northern Cape, Noupoort Wind Farm spans 7,500 hectares and comprises thirty five 99m-high wind turbines.

When operating at full capacity, the 80MW Noupoort Wind Farm generates around 304,800 MWh/year of clean renewable energy per year and is expected to supply electricity to power up to
70 000 South African homes.

Summary of Role:

 

The Project Officer Intern will provide administrative support to the Project Officer, who is the point of contact for the local community, as well as assisting the Economic Development Manager (ED Manager) when distributing key project information.

 

This role will provide a learning environment for the Intern to develop skills in community development and engagement.

 

What will you do?

 

·       Support the Project Officer as front-line point of contact for the Project Company in the project office.

·       Assist in compilation and distribution of reports and newsletters

·       Provide administrative support to the Project Officer during implementation of approved projects

·       Assist the Project Officer with uploading information into the Trimax Management System

·       Assist with document control (Sharepoint)

·       Provide administrative support to the Project Officer / Economic Development Manager during administration of the Project Company grievance mechanism

·       Provide administrative assistance in organising community meetings, focussed group sessions and key informant interviews with various stakeholders

·       Take minutes at meetings and maintain economic development project files and reports, as instructed by the Project Officer / Project Implementation Manager

·       Liaise with Mainstream Project Team

·       Receive and document community project proposals on behalf of the Project Officer / Project Implementation Manager, if required

·       Assist Economic Development Manager; Project Implementation Manager and Project Officer as needed

 

What we require?

 

·       Minimum of a  post matric qualification

·       Candidates should have good written and oral communications skills

·       Ability to use Microsoft software e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook

·       Fluency in isiXhosa, English or Afrikaans is essential

·       The ideal candidate will have not more than 2 years’ working experience at a similar or more junior level (i.e. casual employment) as the position advertised and should be eager to move into and learn to navigate the area of community engagement

·       Good interpersonal skills and be comfortable in dealing with people at different levels

·       Theoretical knowledge or some exposure to coordinating small projects

·       Knowledge about the area of Noupoort will be beneficial

The position will be based in Noupoort with travel to the Cape Town office periodically

VACANCY – JUNIOR SAFETY OFFICER

Noupoort Wind Farm is situated in the Umsobumvu Municipal Area, 50km north of Middelburg in the Eastern Cape and 15km From Noupoort Town in the Northern Cape, Noupoort Wind Farm comprises thirty five 99m-high wind turbines. The site was chosen because of its excellent wind resource, its proximity to national roads for wind turbine transportation, the favourable construction conditions, municipality and local stakeholder support, the straightforward electrical connection into the Eskom grid, and studies showed that there would be little environmental impact. When operating at full capacity, the 80MW Noupoort Wind Farm generates around 305 916 MWh/year of clean renewable energy per year and is expected to supply electricity to power up to 92 000 South African homes. Noupoort Wind Farm eliminates approximately 314,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year when compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants. In addition to zero carbon emissions and reduced use of fossil fuels, the country will benefit from minimal water consumption during the generation process and significant social and enterprise development programmes.

Summary of Role:

Reporting to Plant Manager, the Junior Safety Officer is responsible for creating, enacting, and updating job safety programmes for employees that encompass government health and safety regulations as well as company standards for safety in the workplace. A core function is training employees on the importance of health and safety on the job.

Outputs overview

• Auditing production, keeping on the lookout for any unsafe behaviour or transgression of regulations

• Participate in audits: H&S, Environmental, Due Diligent etc including quality. (Administration, document sourcing, filing etc)

• SHEQ SharePoint administrative functions.

• Monitoring of the bird & bat, etc. programmes, carcass searching and security services reporting processes, including at the gate monitoring

• Assessing risk and safety hazards of all aspects of operations as per HIRA process

• Ensure monthly safety inspections are done on the correct templates. Monitor inspection findings – Implementation of corrective measure

• Inspecting production equipment and processes to make sure they are safe.

• Ordering repairs for unsafe and/or damaged equipment, including the management and ordering of POE.

• Focusing on prevention by keeping up with equipment maintenance and employee training

• Presenting safety principles to staff in meetings or lecture-type training sessions

• Assist ED team with safety file evaluations and inspections during execution of their projects.

• Present findings on safety rep inspection reports to employees in safety meeting as well as toolbox talks

• Participating in continuing education to update knowledge of health and safety protocols and techniques.

• Do regular self-audits to ensure the programme implemented is effective and contribute to the overall safety of the plant.

• Compile safety plans that include suggested improvements to existing infrastructure and business processes (As well as monitor & review of effectiveness of current processes)

• Sharing information, suggestions, and observations with project leadership to create consistency in safety standards throughout the production team and the entire company.

• Meeting company health and safety goals

• Investigating root causes of incidents and accidents and other unsafe conditions on the job site

• Liaising with law enforcement and other investigators who are present at the time of a serious accident.

• Finding the best way to prevent future accidents by participating in incident investigation and RCAT.

• Reviewing and reporting on the staff’s compliance with health and safety rules

• Monitoring of HSE training’s validity • Do weekly and monthly planning in conjunction with MAMSA Safety Lead.

• Ensure timeous submission of monthly contractor KPI’s.

Internship – South Africa Wind Energy Association(SAWEA)

The South Africa Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) in partnership with Noupoort Wind Farm, is excited to announce that Wind Industry Internship Programme (WIIP) will be running for the second time in 2023. WIIP first launched in 2022 January, where 15 interns were placed and mentored by SAWEA member organisations for a period of 12 months. This current process will however be running for the first time through the Noupoort Wind Farm and we are excited to open it up to the Noupoort community.

The WIIP internship offers hands-on experience to exceptional South African students who are committed to building a career in renewable wind energy.

The purpose of the WIIP is to provide young professionals who have any tertiary education, including N4, NQF level 5 – 6 in Engineering: Energy, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, Civil, with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies and interests, and to expose them to work that is related to sustainable energy.

The students will be working alongside the Noupoort Wind Farm’s Operational Team, being exposed to various tasks and activities in and around the wind farm. The 2023 applications have been reopened to ensure maximum participation and young aspiring professionals are encouraged to apply.
Please note: the program is sponsored and ran by SAWEA, all applications will have to go through the SEWEA website and not submitted to the Noupoort Wind Farm or the team. The Noupoort Wind Farm will only be responsible for the administering of the practical onsite experiential training and development of interns.
