Learners at Enoch Mthetho High School in Noupoort are enjoying the benefits of a newly upgraded state-of-the-art Maths and Science laboratory that is supported by solar powered Wi-Fi infrastructure. With the support and guidance of Noupoort Wind Farm and the Department of Basic Education, this school is now able to offer Physical Science as a subject to its learners for the very first time.

The Noupoort Wind Farm’s mathematics and science development programme includes the recruitment of a Mathematics and Computer Application Technology teacher as well as a teacher for the recently added Physical Science from Grades 8 to 12. “The school was previously unable to provide these subject choices, which meant that students missed out on these essential school subjects,” explained Economic Development Manager for Noupoort Wind Farm, Livhuwani NWachukwu.

The mathematics and science development programme has also included the upgrade of the computer laboratory with 30 desktop computers, a Wi-Fi system and a fully refurbished air-conditioned classroom.

A science laboratory with all the necessary science equipment, resources and text books required for Grades 8 to 12 has also been provided.

What’s more, the Wi-Fi coverage is provided by Mfundo Pedia, an educational system that uses solar power to energise the system. The school will receive 20GB of bandwidth each month for the next 24 months.

With the introduction of new equipment and teachers, the school hopes to increase the interest in these subjects. “The learners who didn’t have an opportunity to study Science before, are now able to study this important subject, which will no doubt expand their horizons in terms of possible career choices as well as brighten their future,” concluded Nwachukwu.
